MOUNT PLEASANT – Nearly two dozen incoming freshmen members of the Central Michigan football program volunteered their time with Habitat for Humanity during the last two weeks.
The Chippewas spent time constructing a fence around the Habitat ReStore Shop property on Pickard Road in Mount Pleasant, cleaning up the grounds behind the shop and organizing storage areas inside the shop. The freshmen volunteered at the site on July 27 and Aug. 4.
A group of freshman football players was scheduled to help with the construction of a Habitat for Humanity house in nearby Rosebush, but inclement weather canceled construction for the day.
The Habitat ReStore Shop is the retail outlet where used and surplus materials are sold at discounted prices for the use in a Habitat for Humanity house. CMU soccer player Kristen Pelkki, who completed an internship with Habitat for Humanity this summer, helped organize the football program’s involvement with the Habitat ReStore Shop.
The work at the ReStore Shop also helped fulfill the community service component of the First Year Experience class the freshmen were taking during the summer session at CMU.
The CMU football program annually participates in a wide variety of community service initiatives. In the last year, the football program’s community service efforts have included: numerous Recess with the Chippewas visits, the State of Michigan Special Olympics Summer Games, the annual Shepherd Maple Syrup Festival, the “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event, Ganiard Elementary School’s field day activities and Super Chippewa Saturday, in which more than 300 area youngsters participated in a free football clinic hosted by the CMU football program in conjunction with the 2009 spring football game.
