MOUNT PLEASANT — The Central Michigan gymnastics program will enjoy a blast into the past and celebrate the team that began its championship tradition.
The Chippewas are welcoming back members of the 1990 team that captured the program’s first Mid-American Conference title in Friday’s home opener against Utah State.
The 1990 squad went 14-3-1 and posted a perfect 8-0 mark in the MAC, the first team in conference history to go undefeated in league play. Shelby Root won the floor exercise and became the first Chippewa to win the all-around at the MAC Championships while Kim Lestan took home a MAC title in the vault.
The team’s title in 1990 began a string of four consecutive MAC championships, the longest such streak in league history.
The gymnastics program has captured 10 conference titles, the most among conference schools.
The festivities will take place throughout the meet, set to begin at 7 p.m.
