Enos Announces Five Members of Coaching Staff

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan head football coach Dan Enos announced five members of his coaching staff on Wednesday.
Joining Enos at CMU will be Mike Cummings (offensive coordinator/offensive line), Joe Tumpkin (defensive coordinator), Kyle Nystrom (assistant head coach/special teams coordinator/linebackers), Terry Samuel (wide receivers) and Kort Shankweiler (running backs).
“First and foremost, they all are outstanding people,” Enos said of the members of the coaching staff. “They each bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to their respective positions, and they will be outstanding role models for our players.”
Coaching Staff Biographical Sketches
Mike Cummings (Buffalo, 1984) - Offensive Coordinator, Offensive Line
Cummings returns to Mount Pleasant for his fourth stint with CMU. He was the Chippewas’ offensive line coach from 1992-97 and 1999, and he was a graduate assistant at CMU during the 1988 and 1989 seasons.
Most recently, Cummings served as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Marshall from 2005-09. At least one Marshall offensive lineman earned All-Conference USA honors in each of his five seasons, including three-time all-conference selection and Rimington Trophy candidate Doug Legursky, who is now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Prior to Marshall, Cummings was the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Western Michigan for three seasons.
Cummings’ career also includes stops at Eastern Michigan (defensive line/special teams/recruiting coordinator, 2000-01), Michigan State (tight ends/special teams, 1998), Millersville (offensive line, 1990-91) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (offensive line, 1987).
Cummings was a three-year letterman at Buffalo. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1984, and he earned a master’s degree from Central Michigan in 1990.
Joe Tumpkin (Michigan Tech, 1994) - Defensive Coordinator
Tumpkin has spent the past two seasons coaching linebackers at Pittsburgh. He worked directly with a pair of All-Big East first-team selections in Adam Gunn (2009) and Scott McKillop (2008). McKillop also was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year and a first team All-American, and he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2009 NFL Draft.
Tumpkin coached the linebackers at SMU from 2005-07. Prior to the 2007 season, he earned a coaching fellowship with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and spent training camp with the Buccaneers’ staff. Tumpkin’s coaching experience also includes stops at Sam Houston State (linebackers, 2002-03; secondary, 2004), Lakeland (defensive coordinator, 2000-01) and Southern Illinois (linebackers coach/recruiting coordinator, 1998-99). At Southern Illinois, he worked directly with eventual NFL Pro Bowl linebacker Bart Scott.
Tumpkin is a 1994 graduate of Michigan Tech, where he was a four-year letterman and team captain.
Kyle Nystrom (Michigan State, 1988) - Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator/Linebackers
Nystrom brings more than 20 years of experience coaching on the defensive side of the ball to the CMU staff. He was the defensive coordinator at Fort Hays State in 2009 after spending three seasons as the assistant head coach at North Dakota State. Nystrom also filled the role of defensive running game coordinator at NDSU.
Nystrom was the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at DePauw in 2005 after coaching linebackers at TCU from 2002-04. In his first season with the Horned Frogs, Nystrom coached All-America linebacker LaMarcus McDonald. The 2002 Horned Frogs led all of Division I-A in total defense (240.3 ypg allowed) and rushing defense (64.8 ypg). He was part of a coaching staff that led TCU to the 2002 Liberty Bowl and 2003 Fort Worth Bowl.
Prior to TCU, Nystrom spent 13 seasons (1989-2001) at Western Michigan. He was the special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach his final six seasons at Western Michigan, helping lead the Broncos to the Mid-American Conference Championship Game in 1999 and 2000.
Nystrom is a 1988 graduate of Michigan State. Nystrom’s coaching career began as a student assistant at Michigan State under George Perles in 1983.
Terry Samuel (Purdue, 1995) - Wide Receivers
Samuel coached receivers at North Dakota State the past two seasons after making a second stop at Nebraska-Omaha. He was the offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Nebraska-Omaha in 2007, helping lead the Mavericks to a 10-1 overall record and North Central Conference championship. Running backs Brian McNeill (first team) and Nate Wurth (second team) both earned all-conference honors.
Samuel coached receivers at Southeast Missouri State in 2006 following his original three-year stint at Nebraska-Omaha. He coached defensive backs at Nebraska-Omaha in 2003 and 2004, then assumed the duties of special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach in 2005. Samuel mentored All-America linebacker Kenny Onatolu in 2005, and he was part of a coaching staff that led the Mavericks to conference championships in 2004 and 2005.
Samuel was a four-year letterman as a receiver at Purdue. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Purdue in 1995 and master’s degree from Nebraska-Omaha in 1998.
Kort Shankweiler (East Carolina, 2006) - Running Backs
Shankweiler comes to CMU after two seasons as a graduate assistant at Michigan State where he was part of the same staff as Enos. Shankweiler worked directly with the Spartans’ offensive linemen and was part of a coaching staff that led the Spartans to the 2009 Capital One Bowl and the 2010 Alamo Bowl.
Shankweiler spent the 2007 season as an assistant coach at the United States Coast Guard Academy where he coached the receivers and served as the video coordinator. Coast Guard won the New England Football Conference Bogan Division in 2007 and competed in the NEFC Championship Game.
Shankweiler is a 2006 graduate of East Carolina. He was a four-year letterman for the Pirates, lining up at quarterback, fullback and tight end during his career. He earned a master’s degree from Michigan State in 2009.
