MOUNT PLEASANT — The Central Michigan gymnastics team has been picked to finish second in the Mid-American Conference for the second straight season, according to the conference’s preseason coaches poll released by the league office on Thursday.
The Chippewas return six letterwinners from the 2009 team that went 19-7 and finished second at the MAC Championships with 194.375 points, only .125 behind Kent State, who was picked to repeat as conference champion. The 2009 squad also qualified for regionals, the first CMU team to do so since 2005.
A pair of 2009 All-MAC performers are among the Maroon and Gold’s key returners in senior Katie Simon and sophomore Kristin Teubner.
Simon was a first-team All-MAC selection after winning a conference-record four events, at the 2009 MAC Championships. The Bristol, Wis., native won the outright conference titles in the vault and all-around and shared the titles on bars and floor exercise.
Teubner was the 2009 MAC Freshman of the Year, the third straight Chippewas to earn the distinction (Simon in 2007 and Andrea de la Garza in 2008). She followed up her strong regular season with a first-team All-MAC performance at the conference championships, sharing the MAC crown in the floor exercise with Simon.
Head coach Jerry Reighard returns for his 26th season at the helm of the gymnastics program and was named MAC Co-Coach of the Year in 2009, the seventh time he has been named coach of the year.
The Chippewas begin their 2010 campaign at Illinois State on Sunday.
