MOUNT PLEASANT - The CMU Athletics Department recently recognized the winners of the 2010 Dick Enberg Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Team Leadership Awards.
The recipients were honored at halftime as part of the homecoming festivities during the CMU-NIU football game on Oct. 16.
Senior soccer goalkeeper Shay Mannino was the recipient of the Dick Enberg Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. The award is presented each year to a junior student-athlete who has a minimum 3.20 GPA, while performing with distinction on the field and being considered a team leader.
Mannino led the nation with 17 solo shutouts in 2009, while being named MAC Defensive Player of the Year and leading the Chippewas to their first ever MAC title and NCAA tournament appearance.
The Grosse Ile, Mich. native is an integrated science major with a 3.82 GPA and was an Academic All-MAC selection in 2009.
The CMU gymnastics and football programs are the recipients of the Dick Enberg Team Leadership Awards. The award is presented each year to a men's and a women's program that best meets the following five criteria: overall grade-point average, academic progress rate, community service, athletic performance and commitment to excellence.
Both programs won Mid-American Conference titles and were ranked in the top 25 nationally a year ago. Both teams also led the conference in Academic All-MAC honorees.
The CMU Athletics Department presents the awards, named after sports broadcaster and CMU alumnus Dick Enberg, each year.
