MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan travels to Navy this weekend for a rare November nonconference game.
The Chippewas and Midshipmen meet at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. The game will be televised nationally on CBS College Sports, while the CMU Sports Network's radio broadcast can be heard over the air and online beginning at 2:30 p.m.
CMU has played just eight nonconference regular season games in November since joining the Mid-American Conference in 1975. The Chippewas are 5-3 in those games, including a 37-34 win at Indiana in their last November nonconference matchup on Nov. 1, 2008.
Navy won the only other meeting in the series, 63-34, at Annapolis in the 2003 season finale. The Chippewas are 2-1 all-time against the service academies, however, having defeated Army in 2005 and 2007.
The Chippewas enter the weekend off their fifth straight win over rival Western Michigan. Ryan Radcliff threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns (his fifth game with at least 295 passing yards this season), Cody Wilson caught 12 passes for 185 yards and a score and the CMU defense forced four turnovers, including a fumble inside its own 5-yard line with less than two minutes remaining.
Junior linebacker Armond Staten was named MAC West Division Defensive Player of the Week after collecting 11 tackles and three forced fumbles in the win.
Navy, meanwhile, has won four of its last five games, including a 76-35 romp over East Carolina last weekend. The Midshipmen posted 596 total yards, including 521 rushing, and scored 48 second-half points. The 76 points marked the highest total for the Midshipmen since 1919.
Alexander Teich ran for 157 yards and a score, Ricky Dobbs added 100 rushing yards and a touchdown (while also completing 6-of-8 passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns) and eight different Midshipmen scored touchdowns in the win.
The Midshipmen rank seventh nationally in rushing offense, averaging 287.8 yards per game on the ground. Navy is also one of the country's most disciplined teams, leading the nation in penalty yardage and ranking fifth in turnover margin. The Midshipmen are averaging just 3.3 penalties per game; they did not commit a penalty in their 35-17 win over Notre Dame on Oct. 23 and were flagged for just one penalty in last week's win over East Carolina.
Following Saturday's game, the Chippewas are off next week before closing the 2010 season at Toledo on Nov. 26.
