MOUNT PLEASANT -- Anastasia Netto put together one of her top efforts of the season to keep No. 4 Central Michigan in the contest but No. 1 Kent State played smothering defense for a 4-2 victory in the semifinals of the 2010 Mid-American Conference tournament at the CMU Field Hockey Complex on Friday.
The Golden Flashes (14-6) used a 21-2 advantage in shots and a 10-0 edge in penalty corners to supply the offense, while the Chippewas (6-14) were held in the game by Netto, who made nine saves.
KSU's Debbie Bell scored a pair of goals and added an assist in the contest, helping Kent State jump out to a 2-0 lead. Emily Girasole scored at the 32:36 mark to cut the lead in half just before he half.
Bell's second goal made it 3-1 at the 42:56 mark, but Pam Seufert found the net at the 51:50 mark to draw the Chippewas back within one. Bryn Stevens netted the insurance marker with just under 14 minutes remaining.
Kent State advances to the championship match, scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
