Spring Practice: Previewing the Receivers
3/31/2010 12:00:00 AM | Football
MOUNT PLEASANT - CMUChippewas.com's coverage of spring football practice continues today with a look at the receiver position.
Receivers coach Terry Samuel welcomes back just one starter from 2009 - senior Kito Poblah - and has a young group of pass catchers to work with this spring. Just five receivers who caught a pass last season return for 2010.
Poblah had the best season of his career as a junior, posting career highs for catches (53), yards (681) and touchdowns (2). He enters his final season having caught a pass in 24 consecutive games. Poblah's experience will be relied upon heavily as CMU looks to fill the holes left by Bryan Anderson and Antonio Brown, two of the most accomplished receivers in Mid-American Conference history.
Matt Torres and Sean Skergan also return for their senior seasons, while the junior class includes Cedric Fraser, Cornelius Gallon and Jeremy Wilson. Six sophomores or freshman also are competing for time during camp, including Cody Wilson, who caught 25 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns in 2009.
Aside from Poblah and Cody Wilson, the only other three receivers on the spring roster who caught a pass in 2009 were Sean Skergan (three receptions), Jeremy Wilson (two) and Jerry Harris (two).
