Spring Practice: Previewing the Quarterbacks

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan completed the third week of spring practice on Thursday with a two-hour workout at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
Much of the focus throughout spring drills has been on the quarterback position, where four individuals - junior Derek Rifenbury, sophomore Ryan Radcliff, redshirt freshman A.J. Westendorp and walk-on freshman Stefan Ede - are competing for the starting role vacated by Dan LeFevour.
Radcliff is the only one of the four who has attempted a pass in a game. He completed 10-of-21 throws for 115 yards and rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown in seven games last season. Rifenbury has appeared in just one game during his career.
"I've been trying to work them with a bunch of different groups, and they've been supportive of each other," said CMU quarterbacks coach Jay Johnson. "I think when you have the type of relationship where you understand you're going to be competitive but still want what is best for the team, you're going to do some really good things."
One of the four will be tasked with replacing LeFevour, the NCAA Bowl Subdivision's all-time leader in total touchdowns and the only player in NCAA history to pass for 12,000 yards and rush for 2,500 yards.
"We all met individually, and I said to them that we've got a big challenge," Johnson said. "They know Dan was good and they have a big measuring stick to live up to, but it's a great opportunity, and I think they're embracing the opportunity."
