RedHawks Rally Past Chippewas to Force Split

OXFORD, Ohio — After a promising start, Miami ruined the Central Michigan softball team’s bid for a series sweep when it scored eight consecutive runs to down the Chippewas, 8-4, on Sunday.
CMU (17-12, 4-4 Mid-American) finishes the weekend 2-2, splitting series against 2009 MAC champion Ball State and the 2009 MAC Tournament champion RedHawks.
“The MAC is a very even league this year,” head coach Margo Jonker said. “I think it is going to go down to the last weekend to determine the champion. The teams that keep competing and getting results are the ones that will win it. We hope to continue competing at a strong level and hopefully have more results go our way.”
Central opened the scoring in the top of the second when Molly Coldren led off with her eighth home run of the season, tying Elizabeth Barnes’ single season school record. Amanda Klosterman made it 2-0 CMU with an RBI groundout to cap the rally.
MU responded with two runs in the second and third innings, three runs in the fourth and another tally in the fifth to build an 8-2 lead. The RedHawks racked up their eight runs on nine hits against three Chippewa pitchers.
The Maroon and Gold played long ball again in the sixth when Jill Schulz blasted her second home run of the season, a two-run blast that brought the Chippewas within four. That was as close as CMU would get as MU’s Jessica Simpson retired the final five Central batters in order.
“We certainly did a good job scoring four off a good team,” Jonker said. “In the end, our defense wasn’t strong enough to get a win today. We struggled a little bit, but credit I give some credit to Miami, they are a good team and made some nice adjustments.”
Kara Dornbos dropped to 7-3 after allowing three runs on four hits in two innings plus. She struck out two and walked one before being replaced by Kari Seddon, who yielded four runs on two hits while walking three and fanning one in one and a third. Sarah Patterson pitched the final two and two-thirds and allowed a run on three hits while striking out two and walking one.
The Chippewas return to action on April 14 when they face No. 2 Michigan in Ann Arbor. That game will be broadcast on Modern Rock 91.5.
