MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Chippewa gymnastics team was the recipient of the 2009 Dick Enberg Team Leadership Award, presented at the 18th annual Student-Athlete Academic Excellence Banquet.
The award, named for esteemed sports broadcaster and CMU alumnus Dick Enberg, is presented to a men's and a women's program that best meets five criteria: overall grade-point average, academic progress rate, community service, athletic performance and commitment to excellence.
The Chippewas earned a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.285 during the Spring 2008 and Fall 2009 semesters, continuing their string of national academic recognition.
Athletic accomplishments during the 2009 season were also factored into the award. The Chippewas finished with a 19-7 overall record and a 10-2 mark in the Mid-American Conference. They took second at the MAC Championships while head coach Jerry Reighard was named MAC Coach of the Year and three gymnasts earned MAC Honors. Nationally, they ranked No. 23 after earning a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Regionals.
The squad has also been committed to involvement in various community and local school activities each season, serving as an example of caring student-athletes who are willing to give back to the community by exemplifying positive leadership.
