MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan head football coach Dan Enos announced Wednesday the signing of junior college quarterback Cody Kater to a National Letter of Intent.
Kater joins the Chippewas after spending the 2011 season at Grand Rapids Community College. He will enroll at CMU for the spring semester, participate in spring practice and have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2012 season.
"We are excited to have Cody in our program," Enos said. "He is an outstanding player and person who will have a chance to compete immediately and will provide depth at our quarterback position."
Kater led GRCC to a perfect 11-0 record in 2011 (including one victory by forfeit), directing an offense that averaged 50 points and 509 yards per game. In 10 games played, he completed 157-of-230 passes (68.3 percent) for 2,218 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also was the team's third leading rusher with 356 yards and nine touchdowns.
Following the season, Kater was named to the Midwest Football Conference All-Region first team and the All-Midwest Football Conference first team.
A three-year starter at Montague High School, Kater led the Wildcats to back-to-back state championships and a combined record of 27-1 in 2008 and 2009. Kater threw for 2,866 yards and 35 touchdowns and ran for 899 yards and 12 scores as a senior in 2009. He finished his career with 79 touchdown passes--second most in Michigan high school history--and a school-record 6,361 career passing yards.
Kater was the Associated Press Division 5/6 Player of the Year as a senior and selected to play in the 2010 Michigan East/West All-Star Game. He was ranked No. 11 on the Detroit News Blue Chip list, No. 12 on the Lansing State Journal Catch 22 and No. 14 on the Detroit Free Press Fab 50 following his senior season.
A two-time all-state, all-area and all-conference selection as a quarterback, Kater also earned all-state honors in basketball and is Montague's all-time leading scorer on the hardwood.
