Power Pushes CMU Past MSU, 8-3, in 11 innings

EAST LANSING — Central Michigan scored five runs in the top of the 11th inning on home runs by Amanda Patrick and Molly Coldren to take down Michigan State, 8-3, at Secchia Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Patrick moved into sole possession of seventh place on CMU's all-time home run list with her seventh home run of the season, 14th career, to propel the Chippewas (25-17) to the victory over the Spartans (21-21).
MSU scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, 3-3, before the two teams were held scoreless over the next four frames.
After Macy Merchant reached on a MSU error and Brittney Horan walked, Danielle Cabrera advanced the runners with a groundout. Patrick then came to the plate and pulled a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall for a 6-3 CMU lead.
With the bases cleared, Kari Seddon , who also tossed all 11 innings for the Maroon and Gold to earn the victory, singled setting up a two-run home run to center field by Coldren for the decisive 8-3 score. The home run was Coldren's 12th of the season, breaking her own single-season record of 11 she set a year ago.
Seddon reentered the circle in the bottom of the seventh, striking out Sarah Bowling looking and inducing groundouts by Karen Fox and Jenny Ramsaier to end the game.
The senior gave up three earned runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out five to earn her 10th win of the season.
Coldren finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Patrick's lone hit in six at bats came on the three-run blast.
CMU is back in action this weekend for a two-game series versus rival Eastern Michigan on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
