MOUNT PLEASANT — Central Michigan head soccer coach Neil Stafford announced Monday the hiring of Ian Carry as the program's new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
Carry brings a wealth of international experience to the Chippewas, who will be seeking their third-straight Mid-American Conference championship, tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 2011.
"Ian will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge of the game to our program," Stafford said. "He has been coaching at a very high level internationally and that is going to broaden our horizons in regards to recruiting. We always want the lifeblood of our program to be Michigan kids and then players from this region, but if he can help widen our reach, those additions to our program will hopefully benefit us moving forward."
"I'm very excited with regards to beginning preseason," Carry said. "The opportunity to not only work with exceptional student-athletes but also to work along side a fantastic head coach in Coach Stafford really drew me to this program. To work at the division I level in a very competitive conference has to be a goal when you are a coach and I hope to bring all my experience from working with the Republic of Ireland international teams to this already successful and growing program."
A native of Dunshauglin, Ireland, Carry worked as an international and goalkeeping coach for the Republic of Ireland from 2007-11. While with the Republic of Ireland, he worked with the nation's U-15 girls, U-18 boys, U-19 women's and senior deaf squads. Carry was responsible for player identification, recruitment, monitoring and evaluation, scheduling and administering of elite training sessions, scheduling of both friendly and competitive matches, video analysis and apparel management.
As a coach, Carry helped lead the U-15 girls Irish team to the Bob Docherty International Trophy in 2008 and 2010. His U-18 boys squad earned the Celtic Cup in 2008 and 2009, as well as the International Centenary Shield in 2008 and 2010.
Carry was also a National Development Officer for Schools for the Football Association of Ireland from 2007-11 where he promoted football nationally within educational establishments, planned and coordinated pilot projects at the national level within school venues, and implemented programs aimed at primary school children to develop technically stronger players.
Prior to his time with the Republic of Ireland and FAI, Carry coached professionally from 2001-07, including stints as the head coach of West of Scotland's U-13, U-14 and U-15 girls squads and as the academy goalkeeping coach for the Celtic FC of the Scottish Premier League.
An Irish goalkeeper, Carry has played professionally since 1993 for Longford Town FC (1993-95), Home Farm FC (1995-98), Queens Park FC (2000-01), Sporting Fingal (2009-10), the Shamrock Rovers (2010-11) and the Republic of Ireland International Squad (2010-11).
