Director of Student-Athlete Development Kevin King, in conjunction with Mediatude President Marilyn Gordon, presented the Chippewa Media Training program over a two-night span. The first night included an interactive presentation that discussed topics such as branding, varying attitudes toward members of the media, and the importance of student-athletes presenting themselves well in any situation.
The players put their new knowledge to practice during the second session by being placed into several press conference scenarios. Each session was video taped and then critiqued by fellow student-athletes and CMU staff.
"When you watch film (of football practice) you get a birds eye view of everything," said junior defensive back Jahleel Addae. Similarly, this media training was very beneficial because it showed us a lot of things we struggle with that we know how to correct now."
A media training program will be provided to the entire football team during fall camp and smaller group sessions will be conducted with student-athletes from other sports throughout the 2011-12 school year.
"Media training helps our student-athletes represent their team, the athletics department, the institution and themselves in a positive light," said King. "Over the past two days we have given them the confidence to know that when they are in front of the media, they have the skills they need to effectively articulate their thoughts. We hope this training goes beyond just the media and gives them skills they can use in the classroom as well."
