The Chippewas' win was their fifth straight in a home opener and their third win in a season opener in four years. The victory over SC State makes the Chippewas 2-0 against current members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
The Chippewas are now 145-58-4 at Kelly/Shorts stadium since 1972, and 19-7 at home since 2006.
Seventeen true or redshirt freshmen made their first appearance for CMU, including starters WR Titus Davis and WR Jason Wilson, who are both true freshmen.
QB Ryan Radcliff moved into ninth place on the all-time CMU attempts list and passed the 500 career attempt mark in the second quarter.
WR Titus Davis' first career reception was a 67 yard TD reception with 8:17 remaining in the second quarter.
QB Radcliff passed the 300 career completion mark in the third quarter. He is just 59 yards short of moving into eighth place on CMU's all-time career passing yardage list, and one touchdown pass shy of moving into ninth on the career touchdown pass list.
HB Zurlon Tipton set career highs in both rushes and rushing yards with 18 and 73, respectively. His previous highs were 16 and 62 against Navy in 2010. He also had a career-long 40 yd kick return in the first quarter. His previous long was 35, also at Navy in 2010.
WR Cody Wilson finished one reception shy of moving into the top ten on CMU's career receptions list.
LB Jake Bentley, son of CMU Hall of Fame member and former Buffalo Bill Ray Bentley entered the game on the last defensive stand of the third quarter. He registered three total tackles.
NG John Williams made his team-high 27th consecutive start. RG Rocky Weaver made his 28th overall start, a team-high.
K Connor Gagnon saw his first game action as a Chippewa, averaging 67 yards per kickoff.
The attendance for the contest was 17,891.
