MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - With no snow on the ground, Tuesday was a great day for the Central Michigan softball team to get outside and let the first official day of practice begin.
The day began with a team meeting, which was quickly moved outside to take advantage of the sunshine. The team has been training on its own in the off-season, so head coach Margo Jonker was not going to spend time much time on the individual skills but more the team drills.
"We will start back with some brief basics, then do some break down drills that will be followed by team drills," said Jonker. "I am anticipating getting into game situations very quickly."
The Chippewas have a lot of loose ends to tie up before their season begins due to the graduation of the whole infield, minus the shortstop. The team will also have to get acquainted with the addition of four freshmen and two new coaches.
"I am excited about the potential of our youth and how it comes about," commented Jonker. "We have a new coaching staff, outside of myself, so a lot of things are going to be different this year. I really want to see what this team's identity is going to be and I hope they choose to be scrappers."
The Maroon and Gold have just over a month until the first pitch when they begin their season in Tempe, Ariz., on Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. against Minnesota. Check back at cmuchippewas.com for a full season preview in the coming weeks.
