Ball State Notes
• With Saturday’s 41-30 victory, Ball State has now defeated Central Michigan in four of the past five meetings, including the past three in a row.
• With 233 yards on the ground, Ball State topped the 200-yard rushing mark as a team for the fourth time in eight games this season. The Cardinals also ran for at least 200 yards in their first three games (vs. Eastern Michigan, Clemson and Indiana).
• Sophomore Jahwan Edwards rushed for 128 yards and junior Barrington Scott added 99 to nearly give the Cardinals two 100-yard rushers. The last time Ball State had two rushers top 100 yards came against Eastern Michigan in 2009 when MiQuale Lewis ran for 301 and Cory Sykes had 203.
• For Edwards, the 128 yards marked his third 100-yard game this season and the fifth of his two-year career.
• Scott ran for one touchdown and caught another against Central Michigan, marking the first two-touchdown game of his career. Saturday’s touchdowns were the first and second this season for Scott and the fourth and fifth of his career. He caught two TDs and ran for one as a sophomore in 2011.
• Junior quarterback Keith Wenning made his 30th consecutive start for Ball State. He has started every game since the third game of his true freshman season in 2010.
• Wenning threw three touchdown passes for his 10th career game with at least three scoring tosses. His 15 touchdown passes this season are tied for the ninth-most in a season in Ball State history. His 19 TD passes last season rank third on that list.
• Wenning also scored his third rushing touchdown of the season on a quarterback sneak in the second quarter. It was the eighth rushing score of his career.
• Wenning, who threw for 231 yards Saturday, now owns two of the top-5 yardage totals for a single season in school history. His 2,236 yards this season are the fifth most by a Cardinal, and his 2,786 yards last season are the third most.
• Wenning moved into second place on Ball State’s career lists for passing yards (6,395) and yards of total offense (6,658). He surpassed Mike Neu (1990-93) on the passing yardage list and Talmadge Hill (2000-03) on the total offense list. Wenning now trails only Nate Davis (2006-08) in both categories. Davis finished his career with 9,233 passing yards and 9,732 yards of total offense.
• In addition to career passing yards and total offense yards, Wenning also ranks second all-time at Ball State in career touchdown passes (48), completions (631) and attempts (1,021).
• Ball State blocked an extra point for the third time this season, and all three have been blocked by Joel Cox. The junior defensive tackle also blocked PATs against Eastern Michigan and South Florida.
• Ball State forced a pair of turnovers in the game. Cornerback Quintin Cooper recorded his first career interception on a tipped ball in the first quarter, and defensive tackle Nathan Ollie recovered a third-quarter fumble forced on a sack by fellow lineman Brandon Newman.
• Newman’s sack, his first of the season, was one of four on the day for Ball State. Ollie had two sacks of his own to give him three for the season, while linebacker Tony Martin had his first of the year. Ollie and Martin posted sacks on back-to-back plays in the second quarter.
• Senior kicker Steven Schott hit two field goals, a 40-yarder in the second quarter and a 32-yarder in the fourth, to improve to 17-for-21 on field goal attempts this season. His 17 field goals this year are tied for fifth on Ball State’s single-season list, while his 33 career field goals rank sixth in school history.
• Sophomore receiver Willie Snead, who entered the game ranked first in the MAC in catches and receiving yards, caught his sixth touchdown of the season and the eighth of his career in the second quarter. He has caught at least one touchdown in five of the past six games.
• Snead’s 62 catches and 823 receiving yards this year rank ninth on Ball State’s single-season lists.
• Junior tight end Zane Fakes caught his third touchdown of the season in the third quarter. Fakes, whose other scores this season came in the win at Indiana, now owns five career touchdown grabs.
• Punter Scott Kovanda pinned Central Michigan inside the 20-yard line on two of his three punts. Kovanda has now pinned opponents inside the 20 on 21 of his 32 punts this season.
