TEMPE, Ariz. - Molly Coldren recorded her second home run of the season, but the Central Michigan defense could not shut out Iowa who claimed a 4-2 win Sunday, in the final game of the Littlewood Classic.
The Hawkeyes (6-4) were able to score the go ahead run in the bottom of the fourth off a Chippewa error. A home run in the bottom of the fifth gave Iowa an insurance run which allowed it to defeat the Maroon and Gold for the second time in two days.
CMU's offense got going early in the top of the first when Coldren blasted a deep ball over right center scoring two. Iowa tied things up in the bottom of the first when two doubles brought home two runners.
The Chippewas had runners on in the top of the third but a double play ended the scoring threat. In the fourth inning CMU again had their first two batters on base, but a pair of strikeouts and a pickoff ended the threat.
The Maroon and Gold tried to rally in the top of the seventh with two outs. Macy Merchant beat out a ball to first and then was advanced to second off a Horan walk. The final batter struck out swinging and the rally was over.
Merchant finished the day 3-for-4 while Horan and Coldren each had a hit of their own.
Kara Dornbos started in the circle but only threw one inning allowing two runs on four hits. Chelsea Sundberg came on in relief in the bottom of the second also allowing two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits. She struck out four.
CMU will take two weeks off before heading to Florida to compete in the South Florida Under Armour Invitational on Friday, March 2.
