YPSILANTI, Mich.- Senior Kristin Teubner put together her best all-around performance of the season Friday night, scoring a 39.275 to take first place at the Illinois/Michigan Challenge.
Central Michigan finished in third place as a team with a score of 192.200, edging Eastern Michigan's 191.775, but falling to Illinois State who scored a 192.875 and Illinois-Chicago with a 194.125.
"Earlier this week we had some people we weren't even sure we could count on and thought they were going to be sidelined," head coach Jerry Reighard said. "The amazing thing about this group is they want to compete. They don't take not competing lightly and I really found that out today. As we got on the bus and got to the arena, the people who we didn't think could compete were asking to be put in. We were able to look at some positive things they were doing in warm ups and the drive that we saw out of them spoke volumes today."
Teubner stole the show inside Bowen Field House, claiming first-place finishes on the balance beam and floor with season-high scores of 9.850 and 9.825 while finishing second on the vault with a 9.850. She also finished tied for fourth in the uneven bars, scoring a 9.750.
"Our team is going to be all-around dominated and we recognize that as does Kristin," Reighard said. "With her putting together this meet and Brittany doing so well last weekend, it's a great one-two punch."
The Chippewas (8-3) struggled with falls in the middle two rotations of the meet, having to count two each on balance beam and floor, digging a hole they would ultimately be unable to climb out of.
Despite their lowest team score of the season on the beam, the Maroon and Gold were able to claim the top two spots as freshman Taylor Noonan scored above a 9.8 in the event for the first time in her collegiate career, finishing just .025 behind Teubner with a 9.825.
A bright spot also came on vault in the Chippewas' final rotation as Teubner, sophomore Brittany Petzold and sophomore Meaghan McWhorter each scored 9.8 or better to help CMU take the event with a 48.800.
The Chippewas also claimed the top two spots, including ties, on the floor exercise, with Petzold and freshman Halle Moraw finishing tied for second with scores of 9.775.
With the victory over the Eagles, the Chippewas also extended to 12 their streak of consecutive wins over the in-state foe.
CMU is back in action next Saturday, Feb. 11, inside McGuirk Arena versus rival Kent State. Central will be hosting its annual Alumnae Day and the meet beings at 1 p.m.
