TOLEDO, Ohio - The Central Michigan softball team returned to Mid-American Conference play on Friday by splitting a doubleheader at Toledo.
The Chippewas' (19-17, 3-6 MAC) offense was held to only two hits in game one as the Rockets (11-27, 4-6 MAC) claimed a 4-0 win. In the second game, going against the same pitcher, CMU found its bats and claimed a 4-1 win.
The Maroon and Gold will make the 20 minute trip south to Bowling Green for a pair of games on Saturday, at 1 p.m. and Sunday, at 2 p.m.
Toledo's Rohr Shuts Out Chippewas
UT broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. After the first two batters reached base, Kara Dornbos got a huge strikeout for the first out of the inning. The next batter however, hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring a run. Dornbos got the final batter to ground out, thus holding the Rockets to only one.
After the Maroon and Gold stranded a runner on third in the top of the fourth, UT added to its lead in the bottom half of the inning. Brooke Gates, who leads the team in batting, doubled to left field and then advanced to third on the throw, while Casi Rohr scored. The next batter singled through the right side scoring Gates.
The Rockets added one more run in the bottom of the sixth advancing their lead, 4-0.
Rohr (6-15) held the Chippewas to only two hits in the seven innings she pitched for UT.
Dornbos (9-9) suffered the loss in the circle for CMU allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out five.
Molly Coldren and Rachael Hensel were the only Chippewas to record a hit, which came in the top of the sixth and seventh respectively.
Sundberg Cools the Toledo Offense
The Chippewas found their offense in game two beginning in the first inning. Two walks and a single by Molly Coldren loaded the bases for Rachael Hensel, who roped a double down the left field line scoring two.
In the bottom of the third the Rockets cut the lead to one, when Brooke Gates scored on a throwing error by the CMU catcher. Gates began the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a single by the next batter.
In the top of the fifth the Maroon and Gold put some insurance runs on the board. With two outs Brogan Darwin pinch-hit and drove a ball down the right field line. Summer Knoop followed and singled up the middle. A walk by Coldren loaded the bases for Ashley Gilson. Gilson put the ball in play and allowed two runs to score following an error by the left fielder.
Chelsea Sundberg (6-5) picked up her sixth win in the circle, holding UT to only one unearned run on seven hits. She struck out five batters, her second highest total this season.
Casi Rohr (6-16) went all seven innings for the Rockets, for the second straight game, allowing two earned runs (four total) on five hits and striking out five.
Five different Chippewas recorded a hit, with Gilson and Hensel each picking up two RBI.
