BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Central Michigan softball team fell, 3-2, to Mid-American Conference co-leader Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons (25-15, 9-2 MAC) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth, when Katie Yoho blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence, making the score 3-1.
The Chippewas (19-18, 4-6 MAC) attempted to take an early lead in the top of the first with bases loaded, but a fielder's choice threw a runner out at home and a line drive to the shortstop ended the inning.
BGSU capitalized on its chance in the bottom of the first. The second batter, Rachel Proehl, singled to center, and advanced to third following a Chippewa error. The inning ended with Proehl scoring from third on a double steal, in which the Chippewas recorded the third out of the inning at second base after the run crossed the plate.
Molly Coldren connected on the first pitch she saw in the top of the third, recording her first home run in 10 games and seventh on the season, tying the game at one.
Cory DeLamielleure began the top of the fifth inning with a double to left center. Following her, Macy Merchant drove a ball back up the middle, placing runners on first and third. Paris Imholz came on in relief for BGSU and retired the next two hitters before Ashley Gilson roped a ball down the left field line, scoring DeLamielleure, and cutting the home team's lead to one. Imholz struck out the final batter to end the inning.
With the Chippewas still trailing by one heading into the top of the seventh, the Maroon and Gold got their leadoff batter, Summer Knoop, to single down the left field line. The next three batters were retired in order and BGSU held on to win.
Merchant finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate while Coldren and Gilson each recorded an RBI.
