MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The fans at Theunissen Stadium got their moneys worth Sunday as Game 6 the Fall World Series Classic went down to the wire with Team Gold prevailing, 4-3.
The win gave Gold a 4-1-1 lead in the series. The seventh and final game is scheduled for Tuesday at 2:45 p.m.
The game was tied, 3-3, in the bottom of the ninth inning when Morgan Oliver reached on an error and moved to second on a fielder's choice. Oliver scampered home, beating the throw on a bang-bang play, when Joe Houlihan laid down a bunt and Team Maroon made a throwing error.
Errors played a major role in the game as Maroon had four miscues and Gold made two.
"This was huge," said CMU assistant coach Will Arnold, a former Chippewa player. "I remember back a while ago now you never wanted to go back in the dugout after losing something like this."
Josh Pierce started for Gold, striking out four and walking one in five scoreless innings. Jimmy McNamara and Ryan O'Shea pitched in relief for Gold.
Maroon starter Mark Doerries struck out two over 2 1/3 innings. Braxton Markle and Brady Hardin pitched in relief for Maroon.
Cody Leichman led Gold with two hits and an RBI, Alex Borglin had a hit and scored two runs, and Tyler Huntey had a hit and an RBI.
For Maroon, Zach McKinstry had two hits and drove in a run, Nick Regnier had a hit and an RBI, and Pat MacKenzie had a hit.
