EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State outshot Central Michigan, 14-2, and held a 4-0 edge in penalty corners Sunday in downing the Chippewas, 2-0 in a non-league field hockey match.
It was the second straight loss for the Chippewas, who are 6-11. CMU dropped its first Mid-American Conference match on Saturday, 3-2, to Ohio in overtime.
CMU, which is 4-1 in the league, will play host to Kent State (8-8, 5-0) on Saturday, Nov. 1 (1 p.m.). It is the regular-season finale. If CMU wins, it shares the MAC regular-season title and will be seeded No. 1 heading into the conference tournament.
"We know there is a lot on the line for the Kent game," CMU coach Cristy Freese said. "I think our players have handled the pressure well this season."
Kent beat Longwood, 1-0, on Sunday to take over sole possession of first place in the league.
Abby Barker scored both goals for the Spartans (10-7) on Sunday. Her first came at the 39-minute mark, the second with 10 minutes remaining.
"I think our team out come strong today," Freese said. "We were focused and played better."
Sadie Lynn Reynolds made nine saves in goal for the Chippewas.
