MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan gymnastics team finished 19th nationally and had 11 student-athletes earn Scholastic All-America honors from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women for their performance in the classroom during the 2013-14 academic year.
The Chippewas posted a cumulative 3.4676 GPA. This is the second straight season that CMU has finished in the top 20 in team GPA as they finished 18th last year. Central Michigan also won its fifth-straight Mid-American Conference title last season.
The Chippewas to earn the awards are Rachel Carr (3.93 GPA/undecided major), Kylie Fagan (3.71/early childhood development and learning), Caroline Fitzpatrick (3.62/undecided), Victoria Garcia (3.55/accounting), Preslee Harrald (3.87), Emily Heinz (3.75/biology/biomedical sciences), Megan Lamphere (3.77/therapeutic recreation), Halle Moraw (3.73), Taylor Noonan (3.60/biology), Brittany Petzold (3.80/health fitness) and Shaila Segal (3.83/undecided). To receive the award, an individual must have earned a cumulative or year-long GPA of 3.5 or higher.
"We are extremely pleased we had so many nationally recognized student-athletes," CMU coach Jerry Reighard said. "Our student-athletes work very hard in the gym and to take that and combine it with what they accomplish in the classroom to maintain such high GPA marks shows me they are going to be very successful in their futures."
The 11 honorees is the second highest in a single season in program history, surpassed only by the Chippewas' 13 honorees in 2011.
In total, 134 Central Michigan gymnasts have earned the Scholastic All-America distinction since 1991.
