MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Defying cold weather and spotty rainfall, the Central Michigan baseball team opened the Fall World Series Classic Friday afternoon at Theunissen Stadium.
The Maroon team topped the Gold, 6-2, in the opener of the seven-game series. Game 2 is Sunday at 1 p.m. Junior left-hander Adam Aldred will start for the Maroon squad against sophomore righty Jordan Grosjean. Game 3 is slated for Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. Freshman right-hander Pat Leatherman will start for the Maroon against Josh Pierce, a junior lefty.
"I was really happy to get the game in today after getting 2 inches of rain in the last 24 hours, and I thought the team played well, especially the two starting pitchers," coach Steve Jaksa said.
Maroon starter Tim Black outdueled the Gold's Sean Renzi for the win on Friday. Black struck out seven, walked one and allowed two runs on five hits over six innings. Renzi went four innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits, while walking three and striking out three.
"What we did to pick the teams is to split up the six seniors, and then they just pick the remaining guys by position, one-by-one," Jaksa said. "This is Game 1 of seven games that we'll do like this, and it helps us to figure out the individual strengths in as real a game situation as the rules allow."
Freshmen Zach McKinstry and Colton Bradley led the Maroon team with two hits apiece. The Maroon finished with 10 hits. McKinstry drove in two runs.
Cody Leichman and two hits and drove in a run for the Gold and Alex Borglin tripled.
