MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Gold team defeated the Maroon, 7-2, Sunday at Theunissen Stadium to even the Central Michigan baseball team's Fall World Series Classic at a game apiece.
Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. Right-hander Pat Leatherman will take the hill for the Maroon against left-hander Josh Pierce. Game 4 is scheduled for Friday at 3:05 p.m.
Ryan Heeke and Alex Borglin led the Gold with three hits apiece. Borglin drove in a run, while Heeke was hit by a pitch and picked up an RBI.
Nick Regnier had five hits - all singles - to lead Maroon, while Zack Fields three hits including an RBI double to left field.
Maroon got both of its runs in the top of the third. Gold did all of its scoring in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Both teams laid down several bunts, many of which resulted in infield base hits.
"Small ball," coach Steve Jaksa said. "That's how we're going to have to play. Play the guys that can run, the guys that can move and put the ball on the ground and use their skill. It's one of the tools they have and they have to use that tool to their advantage.
"I did think we swung the bat a little better today. We played a little harder. I still think we can play harder yet. For nine innings I think we can do a little bit better. Not that we did poorly. I thought we did the little things well today."
Jordan Grosjean started for Gold against Adam Aldred. Mark Doerries, Brady Williams and Brady Hardin pitched in relief for Gold. Jimmy McNamara and Jason Gamble pitched in relief for Maroon.
