MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan senior forward Cayleigh Immelman has been named Mid-American Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Immelman is the third Chippewa to be recognized by the MAC this season after junior midfielder Kaysie Gregory and junior goalkeeper Sadie Lynn Reynolds swept the weekly league awards on September 30.
Immelman recorded a hat trick to lift CMU to a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 overtime conference win over Longwood on Sunday in Mount Pleasant.
With the Chippewas down 3-1 late in the second half, Immelman scored two goals in the span of 44 seconds to tie the match and set the stage for overtime. Then, with time dwindling down in the first overtime, Immelman completed the CMU rally when she gained space near the top of the circle and backhanded a smash past the LU goalkeeper and into net. Immelman was eminently efficient on the day, scoring on all three of her shots.
Immelman is tied for the MAC lead in game-winning goals with two and ranks fifth in goals with five. She shares, with Gregory, the team lead in points with 11.
The win over Longwood moved the Chippewas to 2-0 in MAC play and kept them atop the conference standings, tied with Miami (Ohio), a team they will face off with first place on the line on Friday at 3 p.m. at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
After meeting the RedHawks, Central Michigan will finish out a three-match home stand on Sunday when it hosts Big Ten frontrunner and eighth-ranked Northwestern (9-3) at noon.
