MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Senior Chloe McIlwaine of the Central Michigan field hockey team was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week. McIlwaine, who hails from Belfast, Northern Ireland, helped the Chippewas to a 2-1 victory Saturday over Kent State, a win that gave CMU the MAC regular-season co-championship.
McIwaine helped CMU hold the Golden Flashes' offense, the conference's most prolific, well below their season average in shots and goals. She was key in preserving a one-goal halftime lead, not allowing Kent State a second half goal despite the Golden Flashes maintaining possession for much of the final 35 minutes.
The win gave the Chippewas the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament, which is to be played at Kent State and begins on Friday. A transfer for one season from Robert Morris after its field hockey program was eliminated, McIwaine has appeared in all 17 games for CMU, starting 15, recording one assist and one defensive save.
