Trio Leads Gymnastics at Regionals

ATHENS, Ga. – A trio of gymnasts led No. 18 Central Michigan University to one of its best finishes ever at the NCAA Regional Championships in Athens, Ga., on Saturday.
The Chippewas finished third with a 195.600, which matches the second-best finish in program history. The 2003 squad tied for second and the 1999 team also finished third. This is also the second-best regional score in program history.
No. 7 Michigan won the event with a 196.750 while host Georgia (196.375) took second to advance to the NCAA National Championships. CMU defeated Ohio State (195.100), NC State (194.550) and Rutgers (193.750). The NCAA Championships are being held April 18-20 at the BJCC in Birmingham, Ala.
Emily Heinz, Halle Moraw and Taylor Noonan tied for first on beam with a 9.850, tentatively sending all three to nationals. The final announcement will be made on Monday. The trio joins just three other CMU gymnasts who have won regional titles with the last being Sara Burtinsky on bars in 2004. Burtinsky was also the last Chippewa to qualify for nationals.
The Chippewas started the meet on vault, posting a 48.575. Moraw led the way with a 9.750, good for 21st overall, while Heinz, Brittany Petzold and Kirstin Stambaugh all finished right behind her with a 9.725.
After a bye, CMU moved to bars where they posted a 48.800. Karlee Teet was the top scorer with a 9.850, placing her eighth, while Kylie Fagan finished 12th with a 9.825 and Noonan and Taylor Bolender tied for 13th with a 9.800. Central Michigan sat fourth midway through the meet 97.573
CMU caught fire on beam, posting a 49.000, which was the top team score of the meet. Along with the trio of first-place finishers, Fagan posted a 9.750 to finish 14th and Becca Druien had a 9.700.
The Chippewas finished the meet with a strong performance on floor, notching a 49.225. Moraw earned another top three finish with a 9.900 while Heinz took eighth with a 9.875 and Preslee Harrald was 11th with a 9.850.
CMU wraps up the season at 24-5 overall.
