MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Former Central Michigan pitcher Matt Trowbridge signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday and will begin his professional baseball career with the team's Class Single-A affiliate in Aberdeen, Md.
Trowbridge, a left-hander, was selected on June 7 by the Orioles in the 13th round (391st overall) of the Major League Baseball entry draft. He was one of two Chippewas taken in the draft. Pitcher Jordan Foley went to the New York Yankees in the fifth round.
Another standout hurler on the 2014 Chippewa roster, Pat Kaminska, recently signed with the Texas Rangers organization.
Trowbridge, who completed his junior year of college eligibility in 2014, appeared in 16 games this season for the Chippewas, starting two. He finished 2-2 with a 2.59 earned run average. He worked 31 1/3 innings, striking out 43 and walking 23. He also recorded five saves.
Trowbridge was CMU's opening-day starter in 2013, then converted to the closer's role and finished third in the Mid-American Conference with nine saves, a number that at the time ranked second in school history for a single season. He made 20 appearances that season, recording 53 strikeouts, the second most among Chippewa hurlers.
Trowbridge, 22, is a native of Mokena, Ill., and a graduate of Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, Ill.
