SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Errors proved costly for the Central Michigan baseball team Friday as it dropped a 5-3 decision in game one of its four-game series with Texas State.
The Chippewas (5-4) committed four errors in the loss, their third straight.
CMU starter Nick Deeg (2-1), who had allowed just one run in his first two starts this season, surrendered five runs (four earned) in going six innings. He struck out three and walked two.
The Chippewas staked Deeg to a 3-0 lead through 2 ½ innings. Zack McKinstry drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Tyler Huntey had an RBI single.
Texas State (3-5-1) responded in the bottom of the third with four runs, the big blow a bases-loaded triple by Davis Paiz.
"Only one ball was hit out of the infield," CMU coach Steve Jaksa said of the Bobcats' third. "He (Deeg) hit a guy. The next guy hit a ground ball to second and we didn't feel we played it well, but they gave him a single for it. The next guy bunted for a hit and the throw to first pulled (the first baseman) off the base and they gave him a hit for that too. There's two close hits in that inning.
"For whatever reason, we did not play well. Those four errors, plus the two others, those are all makeable plays. It wasn't a very solid game for us at all as a team."
Logan Regnier and McKinstry had two hits apiece to lead CMU's six-hit attack.
The Chippewas left the bases loaded in the eighth inning, and stranded nine runners in the game.
Sean Martens and Jimmy McNamara each pitched an inning in relief of Deeg and each struck out two.
Lucas Humpal went seven innings for the win. He allowed five hits, walked four and struck out three.
The teams will play a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Saturday, and close the series on Sunday at noon.
