MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan couldn't get the big hit when it needed it Friday in falling to Ohio, 6-4, in its Mid-American Conference and home opening baseball game at Theunissen Stadium.
The Chippewas (13-9), who have lost three straight, collected 10 hits to match the Bobcats (12-6), but stranded 13. Five times CMU left at least two runners on five times, and in the ninth had the bases loaded with one out but couldn't push across a run.
"Any time you lose the first game of a series on Friday it's disappointing," CMU coach Steve Jaksa said. "We had enough opportunities to win against them today and we didn't get in done."
Nick Regnier and Alex Borglin had two hits and an RBI to lead the Chippewas at the plate, while Logan Regnier and Joe Houlihan each doubled. Freshman Zach McKinstry also contributed a hit and an RBI.
Sophomore left-hander Nick Deeg (3-2) took the loss. He allowed five run (three earned) on seven hits while walking three and striking out three. Jimmy McNamara and Sean Martens pitched in relief.
The Chippewas got a run on the first when Nick Regnier scored on a fielder's choice. Ohio tied it in the third when John Adryan doubled then scored on back-to-back CMU errors. The Chippewas were charged with three errors on the day.
Ohio surged ahead with three runs in the fifth.
The teams are scheduled to play on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. at Theunissen Stadium. The series finale is slated for 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
"We have been in this position before," Jaksa said. "We know we have to come back tomorrow and make sure we put our best foot forward and get back on track a little bit."
Freshman right-hander Pat Leatherman (2-0) will start for the Chippewas against freshman left-hander Mason McWilliams (1-1).
