MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan baseball team received some truly dominant pitching Sunday as the Chippewas defeated Ohio, 4-0, to win the rubber match of a three-game Mid-American Conference series at Theunissen Stadium.
Junior right-hander Jason Gamble turned in a sparkling outing, allowing six hits in going the distance.
CMU is 15-9, 2-1 in the MAC. Ohio is 12-8, 1-2. The Chippewas dropped Friday's series opener, 6-4, then bounced back for a 9-3 victory on Saturday.
"I'm really proud of how our club battled back the last two days after a really tough loss on Friday," CMU coach Steve Jaksa said. "We got back in the mode and played really well (Saturday) and played even better today."
It was the first complete game shutout for Gamble, who struck out one and walked one in improving to 3-1 and lowering his earned run average to a team-best 1.91 in seven appearances, four of them starts.
"Gamble threw a great game today," Jaksa said. "From a guy going from being a reliever for two years to a starter and now he throws a complete game shutout, that's just tremendous."
Gamble got plenty of help from his defense, which played error-free for the second straight game and turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
"I just throw strikes and I don't really have any overpowering pitches so I rely on my defenders to get my outs," Gamble said. "They played really well behind me today and I really appreciate that."
Tyler Huntey had a pair of RBI doubles - one in the fifth inning, the other in the seventh -- to lead CMU's seven-hit attack.
Logan Regnier added an RBI single and Alex Borglin finished with two hits for the Chippewas, who are scheduled to play a non-league game at Michigan State on Tuesday (3:05 p.m.) and return to MAC play with a three-game set at Miami (Ohio) beginning on Friday.
Ohio starter Tom Colletti allowed three runs on five hits over six innings in taking the loss. He struck out three and walked one.
