Chippewas Drop First Two in Florida

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Central Michigan softball team dropped both of its games Friday at the South Florida Under Armour Showcase.
The Chippewas collected just two hits in falling to North Florida, 1-0, in its opening game. CMU fell to Mercer, 10-6, on Friday night.
Kristen Kuhlmen and Lacy Tolfree each singled for CMU against North Florida. Kuhlmen's hit came in the sixth inning and was the Chippewas' first of the game.
North Florida pitchers Geneva Santos and Kaylie Wallace combined to issue seven walks and hit one batter, but the Chippewas couldn't take advantage and stranded eight.
North Florida used an error, a bunt and a single to push across the game's lone run in the fifth.
Sophomore Rachael Knapp started and went the distance in taking the loss agaist North Florida. She struck out 10 and walked one.
Santos, who started, got the win. She went 5 1/3 innings, struck out seven, and did not allow a hit. Wallace went the final 1 2/3 innings and picked up the save.
Statistics for the CMU-Mercer game were unavailable.
CMU (2-9) is scheduled to play Boston College (11:15 a.m.) and Wisconsin (1:45 p.m.) on Saturday. Closing out the weekend, the Chippewas will play Pennsylvania on Sunday morning.
