WICHITA, Kan - Sunday marked a hit parade for both teams as Central Michigan dropped a 10-5 decision to Wichita State in a non-conference baseball game.
The Chippews (10-5) failed in their bid to sweep the series, but they took two of three from the Shockers, marking their third series win in four tries this season. They split their other series.
Wichita State scored five runs in the seventh inning to break a 5-5 tie. Josh Pierce allowed four runs on three hits over 1 1/3 innings in taking the loss. He struck out two.
CMU starter Jason Gamble went 4 2/3 innings before handing it over to Pierce. Gamble surrendered five runs on seven hits and walked one.
"He's (Gamble) flashed a lot of good things for us," CMU coach Steve Jaksa said. "He did a lot of good things. I think he will continue to do that and he will continue to build his arm strength."
Daniel Jipping hit a solo home run and Joe Houlihan ripped a three-run shot to lead the Chippewas at the plate. Alex Borglin also had an RBI single. Jipping finished with two hits and his homer was the first of his career.
"They (Jipping and Houlihan) had good swings and they had a good approach, Jaksa said. "Neither of them were trying to hit a home run, and both of them hit the ball really well. When you string together good at-bats good things are going to happen."
The Chippewas will remain in the state of Kansas to face the University of Kansas at Hoglund Ballpark on Tuesday at 4 p.m. They will then travel to Indiana to compete in the Indiana State Invitational.
Indiana State, Rutgers, and Canisius will partake in the invitational. CMU will play its first game on Thursday, March 12, at 3 p.m. against Indiana State.
