Central Michigan's Nick Deeg made history Sunday when he was named a Rawlings Gold Glove winner by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Deeg is one of nine NCAA Division I players, one at each position, to be so honored, and is the first in CMU history to capture a Gold Glove.
"Nick has been really consistent over the past two years, not only fielding his position, but also holding runners on and picking guys off base," CMU coach Steve Jaksa said. "Those two things are how you control the running game. Makes a big difference.
"It's a big accomplishment and a tremendous honor for our school, our program, our league and our region. It says that we compete nationally and people recognize us throughout country. It shows the caliber of player that we bring in and the respect that our conference has nationally."
The Gold Gloves are awarded to players across the country as voted on by the ABCA All-America Committee, which is meeting this week in Omaha, Nebraska during the College World Series.
Deeg, who hails from Lake Orion, completed his sophomore season in 2015, during which he was named to the Mid-American Conference All-Defensive team.
He compiled a 1.000 fielding percentage, handling 30 chances with eight putouts and 22 assists. Of the 14 baserunners who attempted to steal a base with Deeg on the mound, nine were thrown out, and he picked off four baserunners this season.
He finished 2015 at 8-5 with a 3.11 earned run average, making 15 appearances (all starts). He struck out 56, walked 28 and allowed 88 hits in 89 2/3 innings.
Other Gold Glove recipients: Garrett Stubbs, catcher, Southern California; Eric Gutierrez, first base, Texas Tech; Cavan Biggio, second base, Notre Dame; Mitchell Tolman, third base, Oregon; Alex Bregman, shortstop, LSU; Cole Billingsley, outfield, South Alabama; Brad Elwood, outfield, Charlotte; Andrew Stevenson, outfield, LSU.
