MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — The Central Michigan women's soccer team came up short in its home opener on Sunday, falling to 24th-ranked DePaul, 1-0, at CMU Soccer Stadium.
The Chippewas (1-4-1) went toe to toe with the Blue Demons (6-1-1), holding them scoreless until midway through the second half.
"I thought we put a good performance against a team in the top 25," CMU coach Peter McGahey said. "The unfortunate thing is that we didn't do the little pieces and details to earn that (win)."
CMU kept pace offensively with DePaul, finishing with seven total shots compared to nine by the Blue Demons. The Chippewas held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
"The thing I am excited about as we move forward in the season, is that this team has continued to respond in a really positive way, when we've put them into some pretty big games," McGahey said.
Freshman forward Madison Pogarch led the Chippewas with two shots on goal. Junior Taylor Potts made several plays defensively and contributed a shot on goal.
"I think we are definitely getting closer," Potts said. "The thing that is upsetting is that we really thought this was the game and we finally had it, but it just wasn't quite enough."
Freshman goalkeeper Zoie Reed made two saves.
The Chippewas will return to action next Sunday as they take on Illinois State (2-5-1) in their final non-conference game of the year. CMU opens Mid-American Conference play on Sept. 25 at Western Michigan.
