MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan field hockey team will hit the road in a quest for its first victory of the season on Friday when the Chippewas take on Virginia Commonwealth at 6 p.m. in Richmond, Va.
CMU is 0-2 after opening-weekend losses to Delaware and Michigan State. The Chippewas are scheduled to play William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., on Sunday at noon.
"We had a good week of practice and I was pleased with the improvements," first-year CMU coach Molly Pelowski said. "We're looking forward to facing off with both of these opponnents.
VCU opened the season with a 4-3 overtime loss to Kent State last weekend. William & Mary is 1-1. Both should prove stiff tests for a Chippewa team that appeared to have made great strides in the short turnaround last weekend from the opening-game 10-3 loss to Delaware to a 5-1 defeat to Michigan State less than 24 hours later.
Kaysie Gregory leads the Chippewas with three goals for six points, while Maude Stalars has a goal and an assist for three points.
CMU goalkeeper Sadie Lynn Reynolds has made 23 saves for a .605 percentage. The Chippewas have been outshot by a combined 48-9 in their two games.
"The truth is we don't have a single easy game on our schedule," Pelowski said. "We're going to have to earn everything that we get. It's the quality of the opposition that we're playing, but also we have to get better. It's going to be us earning it every time we play."
