MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Jordan Charrette may not have finished with the highest score on the balance beam.
In fact, the Central Michigan senior placed fourth, but it was her calming influence at the sixth spot that helped lift the Chippewas in the third rotation.
Charrette scored a 9.750, which replaced a 9.500, and triggered a wave of excitement from the home crowd and her Chippewa teammates on Friday going into the fourth rotation, the floor exercise.
Charrette's performance helped spur Central Michigan to a non-conference victory over Brigham Young at McGuirk Arena.
"Hats off to Jordan on that one," CMU coach Jerry Reighard said. "In my mind, I think that was the highlight of the meet for me."
The Chippewas finished with 194.775 to win their third meet in as many starts. BYU, which finished with 193.775, is 0-2. CMU won three events - uneven parallel bars, beam and floor exercise - and shared first place in vault.
The Chippewas' 48.925 team score on bars was a season-high.
The benchmark of a 196 score was set in stone for the Chippewas by both Reighard and his gymnasts.
While they failed to reach that number, a score that CMU reached several times last season, they did secure positive performances up and down the lineup, including from freshman Kasey Janowicz, who's scored 39.0 to win the all-around for the third-consecutive meet.
"I think the expectations really came through," Reighard said. "We obviously still have some work to do, but (I'm) very, very pleased with the growth I've seen over the last two weeks."
CMU' Megan Lamphere won bars with a 9.875, Taylor Bolender, won the floor exercise with a 9.900, and Katy Clements captured the beam for the second-straight meet, posting a 9.825 in just her third collegiate competition.
CMU's Karlee Teet scored a 9.775 to share the top spot on vault with BYU's Mackenzie Douglas.
"Vaulting and floor are going to be rough for a while, we're going to have to build some athletes there," Reighard said. "But we did what we needed to do and bars and beam rocked. I was so very happy for those athletes."
The Chippewas travel to Northern Illinois for their Mid-American Conference opener on Friday, Jan. 22. The Huskies defeated the Chippewas in Mount Pleasant last season.
