"This is an exciting improvement for Kelly/Shorts Stadium, both from a functional standpoint and as we continue to enhance our brand," CMU Director of Athletics Dave Heeke said. "Our main focus with this design was to create a classic look that highlighted the action C and Fire Up Chips. Over the past several years we have done an excellent job making both those branding elements recognizable nationwide. This design continues to build on that direction as it will be seen by millions of people both in-person and on TV."
AstroTurf is handling the manufacturing and installation of the new playing surface, a GameDay Grass Xpe synthetic turf system. Installation is set to begin in early June. CMU's current surface was installed prior to the 2005 season.
"I am thrilled we will be getting a new surface this summer," head football coach John Bonamego said. "First and foremost, this will continue to give our student-athletes a safe surface to play and practice on throughout the season. I love the design concept that we selected as it is a mix of both modern and traditional elements, giving us a distinctive look that will be very recognizable, especially on TV."
