ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Plenty of bright spots, and plenty to build on.
Central Michigan played its first varsity lacrosse game on Sunday, falling at Michigan, 14-1, indoors at the Wolverines' Oosterbaan Field House.
"Really proud of the composure that we showed," said CMU coach Sara Tisdale, whose roster is made up almost entirely of freshmen. "We didn't look like an all-freshman-and-one-sophomore squad out there at all.
"We were able to execute some key points that we wanted to hit on on both sides of the ball."
Michigan (1-0) outshot the Chippewas 38-11 and won eight draws to CMU's seven. CMU goalkeeper Dominique Hamman was credited with 10 saves.
Kaitlin Kimble scored the Chippewas' goal, unassisted, just over six minutes in to the second half. Jocelyne Lemay led the Chippewas with four shots.
Natalie Carti scored four goals to lead Michigan.
"Overall I was very pleased with the effort we put forth," Tisdale said. "We played a full 60 minutes against a great opponent and that's not easy to do even for a veteran squad, and we were able to do with a young squad.
"I thought we transitioned the ball very well. Michigan gave us a lot of pressure and we stayed composed in the face of that, which is tremendous."
The Chippewas will have two weeks to prepare for their next game, which is Feb. 20 in Boiling Springs, N.C., against Gardner-Webb. It will be another two weeks after that that CMU will play its third match, this one at Cincinnati.
Having that much time will give the Chippewas a good opportunity "to fully reflect back on (the UM) game and prepare for another great opponent," Tisdale said, adding that a point of emphasis going forward is to "improve our game IQ on the defensive end.
"On the offensive end we'll be looking for a little better shot selection. We got a lot of quality shots (against UM), now it's a matter of putting some finishing touches on."
