CLEARWATER, Fla. - Hanna Warren pitched a six-hitter Sunday as the Central Michigan softball team defeated Winthrop, 3-1, as the Chippewas concluded their Spring Break trip.
CMU finished 7-5 on trip and is 11-12 on the season. The Chippewas are off until their home opener, March 22, against Valparaiso.
Kristen Goodall had two hits including a single that drove in the tying run in the fourth inning.
Maison Kalina's sixth-inning RBI double put CMU in front, and she added a run-scoring single in the seventh.
Roster depth on a trip of this magnitude is important to success, CMU coach Margo Jonker said.
"We had to rest some players during the trip and that led to a lot of players getting some good experience in their absence," Jonker said. "We'll be spending time analyzing the entire trip, players and coaches both."
Warren struck out four and walked two.
"Our pitchers relax with runs on the board," Jonker said. "That's something that we need to continue to work on along with consistent defense.
"It wasn't a sharply played game. That tends to happen when you play so many games in a short period of time. People get tired quicker and are not as sharp mentally. It's good to come out with the victory in spite of that."
Paige Hailey singled in the third inning to give Winthrop a 1-0 lead.
The Chippewas collected 11 hits off losing pitcher Kiley Majette, who walked four and struck out two.
Lacy Tolfree, Allison Curtis and Sara Hansen had two hits apiece for CMU.
