Chippewas Drop Series Opener At Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Xavier collected 13 hits Friday including two home runs in handing the Central Michigan baseball team a 5-0 loss in the first game of a three-game non-conference series at Xavier's Hayden Field.
The Chippewas (4-13) are scheduled to play the Musketeers (5-12) Saturday at 1 p.m. The two teams are scheduled to close the series at noon on Sunday.
A Joe Gellenbeck second-inning homer and a Daniel Rizzie solo shot in the third gave Xavier a 2-0 lead. The Musketeers used four singles to add two more runs in the fifth to make it 4-0. Xavier got its final run in the eighth inning on a double and a passed ball.
CMU starter Nick Deeg (1-4) pitched 4 1/3 innings in taking the loss. He allowed four runs on 10 hits, walked two and struck out four. Brady Williams worked 2 2/3 innings of relief and allowed one hit. Connor Kelly entered in the eighth and allowed one run on two hits.
Alex Borglin, Daniel Robinson, Daniel Jipping, David Cole, Jason Sullivan and Dazon Cole each singled for the Chippewas.
Will LaRue had three hits to lead Xavier at the plate.
Xavier starter Zac Lowther (2-2) pitched a three-hitter and struck out eight for the win. Trey Schram worked three innings in relief and allowed three hits in picking up his first save.
