DeLAND, Fla. - The Central Michigan baseball team found itself in a 5-0 hole after one inning and could never climb out as it fell to Illinois, 9-4, in the Chippewas' opening game at the Westin Lake Mary Stetson Invitational at Stetson's Melching Field.
The Chipppewas (0-8) play Villanova (2-6) Saturday at 1 p.m. and the host Hatters (4-5) on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Illinois scored five runs on six hits - the big blow a three-run homer by Luke Shilling - in the first inning off CMU starter Nick Deeg.
Deeg (0-3) allowed six runs on nine hits, while walking one and striking out eight over five innings. Connor Kelly and Jordan Grosjean both pitched in relief for CMU.
Daniel Jipping had three hits including two doubles to lead the Chippewas at the plate, while Logan Regnier singled and doubled, and Jason Sullivan and Zach McKinstry also had two hits apiece. Regnier and Sullivan each drove in two runs.
The Chippewas did not commit an error, their first error-free game this season, and the three CMU pitchers combined to walk three. CMU walked an average of eight in its four games last weekend in the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix.
Cody Sedlock (2-0) started for Illinois and earned the win. He surrendered two runs on five hits, walked two and struck out six over six frames.
