PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Central Michigan baseball team continued to struggle on its Spring Break trip on Tuesday, falling to Boston College, 9-3, in the Chippewas' first game in the Snowbird Baseball Classic.
The Chippewas slipped to 1-10. They are scheduled to play Butler (4-7) on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Boston College (10-2) broke a 3-3 tie with a four-run fourth inning against CMU starter Grant Wolfram, a freshman left-hander.
The Eagles took advantage of two hit batsmen, a walk, a CMU error, and a single in scoring their runs in the fourth.
After falling behind 7-3, the Chippewas managed just one hit, a seventh-inning double by Daniel Jipping.
"We just weren't able to mount an attack after that (fourth inning)," CMU coach Steve Jaksa said. "We've got to charge just a little bit better and put ourselves in a position to believe we're going to come from behind.
"Every once in awhile the mountain gets too tall and we don't put as good of at-bats together consistently. We've got to fight through that just a little bit better than we did today from the fourth inning on."
Wolfram (0-1) allowed nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits. He walked two and struck out three.
Connor Kelly and Brady Williams each pitched an inning in relief.
The Chippewas managed just four hits off six Boston College pitchers.
Morgan Oliver singled, doubled and drove in two runs to lead CMU at the plate. Jason Sullivan added a single.
Joe Cronin had three hits including a home run and a double and drove in four runs to lead Boston College.
Senior right-hander Jason Gamble will make his first start of the season for the Chippewas on Wednesday against Butler.
"The bottom line is we'll be ready to play tomorrow and we'll have good energy at the ballpark," Jaksa said. "If he pitches like I know he can, like I know he's capable of, think we're going to have good results tomorrow."
