Error-Prone Chippewas Stumble Against Ball State

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Ten runs allowed, one of them earned.
The Central Michigan baseball team committed a season-high-tying seven errors Saturday in falling to Ball State, 10-7, in a Mid-American Conference game at Theunissen Stadium.
The Chippewas, who won Friday's series opener, slipped to 8-27, 3-5. Ball State is 22-14, 8-3. The teams will play the rubber match Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Theunissen.
The Chippewas outhit the Cardinals, 10-9, on Saturday and led 6-3 after five innings and 7-6 after six.
"We did swing the bats well enough to win," Jaksa said. "Why we didn't do well enough defensively, I can't answer that right now."
The Cardinals broke a 7-7 tie with two runs in the eighth. Roman Baisa reached on a one-out single and Alex Call was safe on an error. Baisa and Call scored on a Caleb Stayton two-out single.
Ball State added an insurance run in the ninth when Matt Eppers tripled and scored on a throwing error.
Jordan Grosjean (1-2) took the loss. He allowed four runs on three hits over 3 1/3 innings. CMU starter Nick Deeg went 5 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on six hits. He struck out one and walked one.
Daniel Jipping, who had three hits in CMU's 7-3 win on Friday, had four hits including a pair of doubles and drove in two runs to lead the Chippewas at the plate.
Zach McKinstry had two hits and Alex Borglin tripled. McKinstry also drove in two runs.
B.J. Butler (2-0) went the final three innings for the win. He allowed two hits and struck out three.
Ball State starter Kevin Marnon allowed six runs on five hits and struck out one over 4 2/3 innings. Colin Brockhouse worked 1 1/3 innings in relief.
