MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan softball team collected 22 hits including a pair of home runs Saturday in sweeping a Mid-American Conference doubleheader from Toledo at Margo Jonker Stadium.
Allison Curtis had three hits and Rachel Vieira hit a two-run homer to lead the Chippewas to a 12-3 victory in the opener. Chelsea DeLamielleure had three hits including a homer to pace CMU to a 9-1 win in the nightcap.
The Chippewas completed the three-game series sweep of the Rockets, improving to 18-21-1 overall and 5-8-1 MAC. Toledo is 8-31, 3-11.
It marked the first time the Chippewas have swept a league series this season, and the 12 runs in the opener were a season-high.
"Obviously our bats came through and we were able to score a lot of runs," CMU coach Margo Jonker said. "We've really been working on figuring out how to score runs."
Sophomore Hanna Warren (7-7) allowed four hits, walked one and struck out four in earning the game-one victory.
Trailing 3-1, the Chippewas sent 14 batters to the plate in exploding for nine runs in the fifth inning. Vieira's two-run homer in the sixth ended the game on the run rule.
Lacy Tolfree, Vieira and Sydney Heath finished with two hits apiece. Vieira and Tolfree each drove in three runs. Five of the Chippewas' 12 hits went for extra bases.
Brittany George had a three-run homer for the Rockets in the first inning.
CMU's Rachel Knapp (9-11) struck out four and walked five in tossing a two-hitter for the win in game two.
"I think that they both did a great job," Jonker said of her pitchers, Warren and Knapp. "I'm really happy with both of them."
Curtis finished with three hits, while Maison Kalina added two.
The Chippewas broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth inning. They added five more in the sixth.
Sydney Heath's two-run double in the fifth put the Chippewas ahead, 3-1, and DeLamielleure followed with an RBI single. The big blow in the five-run sixth was a bases-loaded triple by Kalina, which ended the game on the run rule.
The Chippewas go to Ball State next weekend for a three-game MAC series. The Cardinals, who were swept in a three-game series this weekend at Eastern Michigan, are 18-25 overall, 4-11 MAC.
