MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan field hockey team slipped to 1-5 Sunday with a 4-1 loss to Columbia in a non-conference game at Michigan State's Ralph Young Field.
Columbia (2-2) outshot the Chippewas, 23-4. The Lions led, 2-0, at halftime.
"We have a lot of the pieces we need to contend in every game we play, and today I don't think we played up to our standards." CMU coach coach Molly Pelowski said.
Junior midfielder Alex Gonda scored the Chippewas' goal, and it came with five minutes remaining. Emily Barber assisted.
CMU goalkeeper Abigail Ebersole made six saves.
Katie Ruesterholz scored three goals to lead Columbia.
CMU will face Michigan (5-2) on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m. in Ann Arbor.
CMU opens Mid-American Conference play against Miami (Ohio) on Friday, Sept. 23, at home. On Sunday, Sept. 25, the Chippewas entertain Indiana in a non-leaguer.
"Conference play will be a new season for us," Pelowski said. "All of our goals we have for the postseason are still within our reach, but we just have to do better, we have to play better."
