MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Tyler McFarland has joined coach Steve Jaksa's Central Michigan baseball program as a volunteer assistant coach.
After a standout career as a third baseman at James Madison, McFarland was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 10th round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Entry Draft, and was a New York-Penn League All-Star that summer.
McFarland, a left-handed hitter, was a three-time All-Colonial Athletic Association selection at James Madison, where he played for his father, Joe McFarland. He hit .315 during his collegiate career, and in 2011 was named to the Freshman All-American Team.
McFarland will work with the Chippewa catchers and assist with the hitters, CMU coach Steve Jaksa said. He will also help coordinate camps and coach on the bases.
"We are excited to bring Tyler McFarland on board," Jaksa said. "He has gained a lot of knowledge and understanding of the game through his dad, who was a successful coach himself at the college level. We welcome Tyler and are excited to have him on board."
McFarland helped lead James Madison to CAA championships in 2011 and 2012. He hit .309 for the Wareham Gatemen, which won the Cape Cod League, generally regarded as the best summer collegiate baseball league in the nation. He also served as an assistant coach in 2016 of the 18-under Hungarian National Team.
